Hill Family Estate purchased the Windy Flats Vineyard in 2012 after leasing the site for almost a decade. The 142-acre parcel is planted with 20 acres of vineyard and is a unique vineyard site, resting high above the fog line on the steep slopes of Wooden Valley east of Napa. Rocky soils and exposure to frequent wind (hence the name) make this a challenging site for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, yet the reward is high. For Napa Valley wineries, Windy Flats Vineyard offers wonderful potential for exceptional wine.
For the last number of years, the Cabernet Sauvignon from Windy Flats Vineyard has been so exceptional that is has served as the backbone of Hill Family Estate’s two premium Cabernet Sauvignon wines: Double Barrel and Red Door. 2018 was such an outstanding vintage that it seemed like the perfect year to introduce this Cabernet Sauvignon as a stand-alone wine.
The composition of the 2018 Windy Flats Cabernet Sauvignon is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with 10% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot, also grown at this distinctive vineyard site. The wine spent 18 months in 50% new French oak and has incredible depth and complexity that will continue to develop over time.
